MY MASTER CLEANSE EXPERIENCE

I had a little stomach bug almost a week ago, and thought now is THE PERFECT time to do a full-body cleanse. I opted for something simple, effective and modifiable. Enter: THE MASTER CLEANSE.

The master cleanse routine: smooth move (laxative) tea at night, non-iodized salt-water flush in the morning, and a DIY juice made up of organic lemons, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and filtered water. This is all you have for 3 days -or as many days as you'd like!

DRINK AS MUCH FILTERED WATER AS YOU CAN.


It's important to note that while yes, I'm essentially starving my body for 3 days by not eating solid foods, my intention for this cleanse was NOT weight loss, but rather a DETOX. A full system re-boot. A break for my digestive system. A chance for my body to solely focus on healing and repairing.


Another important note is to give yourself a "prep" day right before you start your cleanse. On this day, you cut out caffeine, dairy, meats, alcohol, processed foods, gluten and sugars, to prepare your body for a cleanse. What you can eat: raw, organic fruits/veggies, and minimal protein like beans. Equally as important post-cleanse, you have an "ease out" day to slowly begin reintroducing solid foods back into your diet. Include probiotics (take a shot of kefir in the morning) to restore your body's good bacteria as so much waste and toxins are being released.


During the 3-day cleanse (for the majority of the time) I honestly wasn't hungry. In fact, I had TONS of energy. I took a yoga flow class and went on long walks, but did not partake in any strenuous exercises. My skin was more clear and vibrant than usual too, I normally get little jawline pimples due to hormonal imbalances, but those little pimples were nowhere to be found!


Honestly, the worst part of this cleanse was the salt-water flush in the morning. Not only is it difficult to swallow, but you will be cleansing for at least the next hour/ hour 30 so stay close to a restroom.


What I learned: LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.


Cutting out caffeine was more difficult than I thought it would be. Not for the boost of energy, but because I experienced MAJOR caffeine withdrawals. I had the worst headache of my life for two days (almost felt like a head cold), and on top of that, I had mild vertigo. Didn't even realize I was drinking enough caffeine to experience a withdrawal like that, but now I am more aware and will be drinking much less caffeine moving forward.


During the cleanse, I unfortunately experienced muscle cramping due to dehydration and lack of nutrients (helloo laxative tea AND salt-water flush). I ended up drinking a coconut water for it's nutrients, especially for it's potassium and magnesium content which is key for reducing muscle cramping. I also had a glass of water with a scoop of BCAA's (branched-chain amino acids) for muscle repair.

This was *my* experience with the master cleanse. I did this cleanse with a girlfriend who didn't experience any of the symptoms I did, so remember that every *body* is different. I would HIGHLY recommend giving yourself a complete system re-boot with this easy and inexpensive 3-day cleanse. I probably wouldn't do more than 3 days though, as it doesn't provide many nutrients and does contain quite a lot of sugar.
