With so many products out on the market today, it’s hard to know what will work and what you’re about to waste your money on.

Dark circles are a very common skin concern that can be easily treated, but remember {like everything in life} persistency is key!

Firstly, here are reasons WHY dark circles come about:

You’re tired.

This is an obvious one, but are you getting enough sleep? If you’re not, those dark circles will make sure it shows.

You’re over-stimulating your eyes with technology.

Eye strain causes blood vessels around your eyes to enlarge and as a result, the skin surrounding can darken. Quit staring at your phone for hours (esp before you go to bed), and turn off the TV.

You’ve got allergies.

Rubbing those eyes will only bring out eye puffiness. Allergies also cause dehydration so the skin under your eyes will darken due to lack of water in the body.

You’ve been out in the sun too long.

Sun overexposure causes an excess of melanin that can produce dark spots (or hyperpigmentation) on your skin. Remember that the skin under your eyes is so thin and therefore vulnerable to damage, so you must be wearing (and re-applying) sunscreen as well as wearing UV protected sunglasses.

It’s in your genes.

Just because it’s hereditary doesn’t mean your doomed! It just means you need to be more persistent with the correct regimen. Dark under eyes could also be a sign of a medical condition like thyroid disease. DISCLAIMER: Always speak with your doctor first before self-treating with at-home remedies.

Now here are some at-home remedies you can be doing RIGHT NOW to lighten those dark circles!

Apply a cold compress to your under eyes.

A cold compress helps reduce swelling and shrink dilated blood vessels.

Don’t bring any technology to bed with you.

Instead, read a book or put on a night mask and get to sleep!

Limit caffeine use and drink tons of water!

½ your body weight in ounces of water per day is the goal!

Apply almond oil.

Every night after you wash your face, apply all-natural almond oil on your under eyes. Almond oil helps to lighten dark circles due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Almond oil contains natural ingredients like retinol, vitamin e and vitamin k which may contract the blood vessels that are causing the discoloration. When you wake up in the morning, wash it off with cold water, and repeat this process every night.

TIP: When you apply the almond oil under the eyes, use your two pointer fingers and gently massage in small circle movements to stimulate and increase blood circulation.

And, make sure you buy high-quality almond oil that is pure, cold-pressed and organic.
